Cityscape Drawing

Cityscape Drawing

Looking at something from a bird’s eye view can change the way things are seen. It can bring a new appreciation or meaning to the location. In my Principles of Design class, we did just that.

Our project was to design and draw a cityscape. The first step of this project was to learn how to draw using perspective. To do this we began by drawing cubes coming from a single point. After the introduction to one point perspective, we learned how to draw a house. We began to learn two point perspective drawing. The assignment was to draw your house using two point perspective. Though challenging at first, this assignment would set the stage for our complete cityscape. Once this task was mastered, the class began designing our buildings.

Our goal was create a city that was unique and pleasing to look at. One of the key elements to accomplishing this was finding balance. Our building shapes and sizes had to flow and stay balanced all across the paper. After sketching out the building shapes onto our large final paper, it was time to think of color.

To make our cityscapes interesting and eye appealing, we had to utilize color schemes. Learning about color and how it can greatly affect pieces of artwork is essential for success. We learned about primary and complimentary colors and what affect each group of colors would have on our cityscape. Once we decided on what colors would best fit with our piece, we colored the city.

This was a challenging art project in which I learned a lot. This project taught me about the use of color and perspective. These things will help me as I complete future projects. I am proud of this piece because of the time and effort that I put into creating it. I enjoyed creating a city of my very that had my personal touch added to it.
